Citation Verification
Citation verification is the process of confirming that every case, statute or authority cited by an AI system genuinely exists, is quoted accurately, and remains valid law.
In plain English
Verification has three distinct checks. Existence: does the cited judgment actually exist with that citation? Accuracy: does the cited paragraph say what it is claimed to say? Currency: has the judgment been overruled or the provision amended? A system that performs only the first check will still confidently cite overruled authority.
Why it matters
Fabricated citations have led to sanctions against lawyers in reported cases internationally. Citation verification is the control that makes AI-assisted legal research professionally defensible rather than a liability.

An AI answer cites a judgment with a full neutral citation and paragraph number. Verification confirms the judgment exists, the paragraph supports the proposition, and no later bench has overruled it — then surfaces the source document for the user to read.

Can AI verify legal citations?
A system connected to an authoritative case-law corpus can check that a citation exists, that the cited passage supports the claim, and that the judgment has not been overruled. A model answering from memory alone cannot do any of these reliably.
Why do AI systems invent case citations?
Language models generate text that fits learned patterns. Legal citations have a highly regular format, so a model can produce a well-formed citation that corresponds to no real case. Retrieval and verification against a real corpus is the fix.
